Karzzzz is a faithful remake of Subhash Ghai’s Karz (1980) which is an Indian adaptation of J. Lee Thompson’s English film The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.
Karzzzz is a musical mass entertainer on the theme of reincarnation, a bit of crime and some suspense.
The Synopsis
Monty (Himesh Reshammiya) is a very popular Rock Star in South Africa. He meets Tina (Shweta Kumar) at a party and instantly falls in love with her.
In one of his stage shows, while Monty is singing and dancing to a particular tune, he suddenly goes to a different level of consciousness. He realizes that he was Ravi Verma(Dino Morea) in his previous life (about 25 years ago), and married to a beautiful girl called Kamini (Urmila Matondkar).
From then onwards, Monty is on a sort of self-realisation path exploring his previous birth until he come face to face with Kamini. The rest of the story unravels the mystery of the death of Ravi Verma in the previous birth and the consequences in the present birth.
The Performance
Himesh Reshammiya looks convincing as a Rock star. The debut girl Shweta Kumar is passable. Urmila is her usual ebullient self. Danny Denzongpa enacts his character with élan. Dino Morea looks stylish. All other actors are adequate in their roles.
The Techniques
Satish Kaushik has nothing much to do as this is a remake, though one or two new elements were inserted. Music is the USP of this film and Himesh Reshammiya’s music is already a chart buster. Choreography is trendy and lavish. Cinematography by Manoj Soni is remarkable. Production values are good.
The Verdict
Karzzzz is conceived and delivered as a mass masala musical movie in the time-tested Bollywood formula. Those who have seen the original Karz may be bogged down with inevirable comparisons of performances. But, for the 20 plus audience of today Karzzzz may appeal because of the music.
Moreover, all Hindi films with reincarnation theme have been successful at the box-office: Dilip Kumar’s Madhumathi, Sunil Dutt’s Milan, Subhas Ghai’s Karz, Salman Khan-SRK’s Karan-Arjun and Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om.
Karzzzz is not a multiplex cinema, but there is nothing wrong in having just one look
